First Snow (2007)

Maybe we're just playing it out.
This is another one of those "fate vs. free" will movies. The thing that I tend be consistently disappointed about this type of movie is that, after seeing enough of them, it is an almost 100% guarantee that whatever is predicted by a fortune/psychic/visitor from the future will come true. The idea is to hook you into wanting to find out how it happens. Few movies do that to my satisfaction and this is one of them.
Jimmy Starks was a fast-talking salesman with a knack for turning a deal. On a sales trip he happens upon a roadside psychic named Vacaro who tells him very specific things that he foresees in Starks's future. Before finishing his reading, Vacaro shudders in what appears to be pain. He refuses to tell Starks what he saw and refunds his money. Some of the specific predictions started to come true and Starks wanted to know what made Vacaro shudder. After some hounding and convincing, Starks finds out from Vacaro that he will die the day of "The First Snow." Now he must figure out how it will happen and try to fight his fate.
There is a lot of style to the way this movie was filmed and edited. There is a semi-nonlinear quality to how they inter-mix cuts of the end of his days and how prepared for it. Not only that, but there is enough suspense in what will happen next that you start to get lost in every detail. That is where the cinematography shines.
Guy Pearce (DEATH DEFYING ACTS) as Jimmy Starks was great as the self-absorbed salesman. He was only concerned about his own livelihood until he has to rethink his choices. J.K. Simmons (SPIDERMAN 3) as Vacaro was great as the guy who has nothing to hide. He simply presents what he sees and leaves it to Starks to believe it or not. These are two great actors and I have yet to see them not take a role and make it their own and great. All in all, even though I pretty much knew how this would end, I liked this movie a lot. There is an old saying about driving safe on a road trip, "Half of the fun is getting there." That applies to this story in this movie in the best way.
