Inspirational!!

I title this jokingly, for once I popped in the DVD for PRIDE, I was bombarded by trailers for "inspirational" black stories narrated in that "inspirational" voice-over that they use for trailers to try and make every movie seem like it's more important than it is.

That's precisely the case for PRIDE, a movie which takes the natural cinema stereotype of casting black people as either saints, or saints who falter a bit, or evil drug dealers or pimps. I personally prefer stories that are a little more realistic. I don't mind if the person who is supposedly inspirational is a bit of an a**hole, that's what tends to happen in life. In order for a black man to become an award winning swimmer back in the '60's, if we're to believe the set-up that's laid out before us, he would have had to have been very determined and willing to have shot back more than a little of what he was getting pelted with.

I can't say that I didn't like Terrence Howard in this. Not only is he an actor of exceptional caliber, he's also fun to look at. I don't know of a person around who hasn't watched MISTER HOLLAND'S OPUS and not remembered him as Russ, the kid who couldn't find the beat without some extra help. I'm just surprised that it took him until HUSTLE & FLOW in order to be properly acknowledged.

The movie is OK and it's a decent one to show to younger kids to help get across the point that less than 40 years ago our nation was still dealing with some unbelievable race inequalities. I don't know if it's because we've become more tolerant or not, but I do know that it's easy to forget what our parents worked so hard for because they don't want us to have to go through the same things. For that reason, I give the movie more credit. Because we could ALL use a reminder from time to time.
