Hot Fuzz (2007)

By the power of Greyskull ... Jog on!
I watched this movie, not because of the connection it has to Shaun of the Dead, but because I have heard great things about it. I liked Shaun of the Dead a lot, but it seemed more like what I call a drunken mess movie. By that I mean that the jokes and visuals seemed like they would be enjoyed much more after tying a few on. Hot Fuzz was unlike it in the sense that it had more story and character definition. It is true that many of the same cast members were in this movie, but everybody had more depth in my opinion.
The story is basically about Officer Nicolas Angel, top constable of London. He is so good at doing his job that the department felt he was showing them all up and raising the bar to unnecessary heights. To make him "disappear" he is promoted to sergeant in a countryside village called Sanford where there is next to no crime. As time goes by Angel finds the town is hiding a dark secret.
Now I never claimed to understand British hence not catching every joke in Shaun of the Dead or V for Vendetta. A lot of it deals with political satire which I hardly find funny on this side of the pond, much less in Britain with a political structure I am not fully educated in. Hot Fuzz left out a lot of what could have been thrown in to show just how British this movie is. They took the road of making this a semi-parody of all American cop buddy/action movies which I loved. References to Bad Boys 2, Point Break, Lethal Weapon and Supercop were great. Even throwing in Dawn of the Dead as a reference to Shaun of the Dead was nice. Simon Peg played the straight man perfectly, coming off even less winy than SOTD (Shaun of the Dead) while Nick Frost seemed less crude and disgusting than his role in SOTD in favor of being the naïve cop movie fan boy trying to live out his movie fantasies. Timothy Dalton was great in this movie, creepy and loveable at the same time. "I must be stopped, I'm a slasher. I slash my prices." The story is great, I know I have been in work situations where I worked harder than other coworkers who resented me for it so this pulled me right in as I could relate to Angels plight. There was a good amount of gore and blood, but more towards the "cartoon" violence side of it. The trailers played this movie out to be gun fire and non-stop action, but it paced itself very well in that regard so you never grew tired of the well placed action sequences. This is one of those times where I find myself saying aloud, "I really liked that movie."
