"Two blokes and a f*ckload of cutlery"
There's something that the British are able to do which the Americans have never and probably will never grasp. How to properly apply tongue firmly in the depth of their cheeks.
The reason why SHAUN OF THE DEAD was such a brilliant movie was that while mocking and essentially making a parody of zombie movies, they were able to respect the genre at the same time. Their zombies were properly scary while also making a fantastic social commentary as to the numbing of society's collective brain.
HOT FUZZ pulls off this delicate balance as well. While the biggest laughs in the entire film are while the actors are deeply entrenched in the most high octane of action sequences, this is not entirely a comedy. The movie takes its time to set up a proper story, giving a sh*t about its characters and not just constructing them to suit the purpose of making fun of a genre.
Because of that, people (and when I say people, I mean American people) are going to find fault with portions of the flick. The moments when they are slower going are not going to be recognized for the superb setups that they are and most likely will be viewed as the weak points in the film.
But observed as a whole, HOT FUZZ pulls off in a few sluggish moments what took Johnny Depp and crew to do in an entire film. They create the necessary tension that later amounts to an audience full of people laughing so hard that they're wiping tears out of the corners of their eyes and clapping their praise riotously.
Simon Pegg does such a fantastic job of dialing down the character that he familiarized audiences with in SHAUN that most people will be surprised that he does "serious" so well. (Again, when I say people I mean Americans since we seem to have a bad habit of getting actors out of the stereotypes that we peg them for in order to feel more comfortable with what's up on the big screen.) Nick Frost delves deeper than being just the doofus funny guy, this time being more sweet natured than ham handed like he was in SHAUN.
Overall this is a movie that is packed with solid performances, extremely witty dialog and a firm knowledge of the genre that they are covering. It's a comedy but not really. It's an action flick but not really.
It's a damn f*cking good movie.
Really.
