Heroes in a half-shell, TURTLE POWER!
When I first heard that Mirage studio was working on a new ninja turtles with CGI turtles I thought "Cool, we will finally see the characters look somewhat realistic." Then I saw the darkly lit trailer where you caught a glimpse of the turtles and thought "Okay, they don't really look ultra-realistic, but hey what would they look like in real life anyway?" So there was a degree of forgiveness for their appearance. When I found out the entire movie would be CGI, I was really disappointed. For the record I am not a huge "CGI with big name voice talent" movie fan. I went into this movie with low expectations and which were pleasantly surpassed.
The story begins with the leader of the turtles, Leonardo, in exile trying to learn what in means to lead a team as he battles he own demons. The other three turtles are back in New York trying to acclimate to a life without the constant battle with their nemesis the Shredder and the Foot Clan (always loved that PUN towards "The Hand" a Ninja clan from Daredevil comics.) As this is occurring we find out that there is a new threat ready to emerge and the reappearance of the Foot clan, sans Shredder. The team needs to find its cohesion again and overcome personal issue within the group to defeat the new enemies.
My last two reviews were a bit long so I will cut to the chase in this one. The story was well written by Eastman and Laird (the Turtles creators and original writing team) full of action, yet left enough humor in there to where it could have just as easily been in issue of the comic. I chose to believe the movies takes off from where the first live action movie left off, completely ignoring Secret of the Ooze and Turtles in Time which makes the most sense to me. The two problems I tend to have with these CGI movies never really were an issue. I recognized three names out of the whole list (I try not to read the list of voices until after the movie so I can focus on the characters, not who is voicing them.) Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) was clearly the narrator, Patrick Stewart (X-Men) was Max Winters (new villain) and Sara Michelle Geller (The Grudge) was April O'Neil. Those were pretty clear to me, but I had no idea Chris Evans (The Nanny Diaries) was Casey Jones or Kevin Smith (Live Free or Die Hard) was the diner cook. The rest of the cast were unfamiliar names short of Joe DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama) which was nice. The CGI was very slick and not overly-plastic in texture. Overall it was a fun movie with just enough substance to keep you entertained, but not leaving you thinking about it too much afterwards.
