Good stuff for B stuff
The nice part about watching a thriller where you aren't familiar with the actors is that there is always room for them to surprise you. Sometimes you catch a star in the making. This isn't true for CUBE. The acting is definitely B caliber, but you know what? Sometimes B caliber ain't so damn bad. At least you know that you're getting what they've been paid for. I feel a hell of a lot less disappointed when I watch an actor working for scale over-reach a scene than seeing Tom Cruise get paid 100 million to f*ck something up.
The plot here revolves around 7 strangers dropped into a maze that is booby trapped. 2 victims are killed off quickly, leaving us with the standard set of horror/suspense characters. One is the doctor, one is the cop, one is the young student, one is the "I don't give a crap, but really I'm secretly at fault for all of this" dupe, and the last is the mentally challenged variable. The actors scream and yell at each other, catapulting over dramatics and into histrionics. There were points in the script when it was obvious that no one really understood what the hell they were talking about.
But you know what? I was riveted. It wasn't fantastic, I kept waiting for the next person to get knocked off and I was rolling my eyes over half of what was said. Yet I found myself sitting forward in my seat, listening closer and biting on my thumbnail while trying to figure out what would happen next. The scenes where a couple of the characters die are quite hand-over-mouth inducing, and while the ending is a little disappointing, the journey getting there is entertaining enough to validate the rental fee.
