Movie Review by Jenny
June 7th, 2007

I remember the first time I saw this movie. I had just gotten into Asian horror a few years back when Ju-On (not the Grudge) came out. I saw it in theaters, and it scared the bejeezus outta me like nothing ever had before. I scoured the internet for more *good* Asian horror (coming across tons of bad Asian horror), but in the midst of all of the recommendations, was "A Tale of Two Sisters". I watched it one night, not really understanding much of it. Then I spent the entire next day on the internet, reading reviews, reading people's interpretations of what happened. That night I watched it again. I fell in love.

"A Tale of Two Sisters" is described as "Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother." I guess that sums it up. Of course, there's so much more going on that to even begin to describe it, would give away so much of the movie.

This has become one of my all time favorite movies. The cinematography, the acting, the direction, the movie is absolutely brilliant. It's beautiful to look at, and the story is gripping and emotional. Highly recommended.

This movie is good, but not in the traditional sense of horror that most American film goers are familiar with. Most of the remakes of Asian horror flicks have tried to alter the stories slightly to be more palatable for Americans who find slashers and bloody flicks more entertaining.

This movie excels because of the woman who plays their stepmother. Creepy, mean, cruel and loving every minute of it. That translates in any language.

She's amazing. I also love the actress who plays Su-Mi.
