The First Indie
Seen by many as the first indie film, this work of John Cassavetes is a remarkable look at people in the 1960's when all the gloss and sheen of the decade is removed.
Underneath all that posturing and mascara are people with screwed up love lifes and sordid professions, just as in any other decade.
Gena Rowlands is remarkable as Jeannie the hooker with a soft spot for a married man, but I found the work of Lynn Carlin as the forgotten wife who attempts to live outside herself for one night to be the real stand out in this film.
The cinematography focuses very closely on faces, as per the title, sometimes uncomfortably so, but it helps to reveal the broken humans underneath.
