When did Eric Foreman get hot?
I think the only thing that Sam Raimi could have done worse in this outing was rehiring David Koepp to write the script. Koepp wrote the screenplay for the first Spiderman movie, and that will (so far) remain the outing in the franchise that I liked the least. (Or hated the most, take your pick.) It's sad, really. Koepp was hit or miss with scripts for movies like TOY SOLDIERS, CARLITO'S WAY (excellent), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, STIR OF ECHOES (excellent), PANIC ROOM, THE SECRET WINDOW, and ZATHURA.
This time Sam and Ivan Raimi did screenwriting duty, Ivan being Sam's brother and collaborator on such great scripts as the one for ARMY OF DARKNESS. I'm going to great pains to talk about the writing and the screenplays for a good reason. See, the script for Spiderman 3 sucks.
Sucks big time. Sucks big hairy donkey balls. Sucks worse than anything a comic book could have actually come up with. A bad script was the main reason why I hated the first Spiderman movie. The second Spiderman movie I really like, perhaps because of the script, perhaps because Alfred Molina just ruled. But it also had the added help of having been written by three different people, including Michael Chabon, the man responsible for the novel "Wonder Boys." (Check out that flick if you haven't.)
I have a multitude of problems with this movie. I'll quickly glance over a few of the most glaring ones, the first being the script and the second being the rapid pace over which sh*t happens. It seems like every other minute a new hour has passed and the characters have gone through another twist of emotion. I don't read comic books and even I know that they take more time than what elapsed in this flick.
I also have to say that the villains sucked. While I can grasp that the concept was that the ultimate villain was supposed to be the demon within us all, I still say that if you're going to make comic book movie, it is imperative that you have a decent villain for the hero to battle. While I liked when they eventually got around to introducing Venom, his screen time was almost nil in comparison to all the time devoted to a bunch of nonsensical crap.
A smaller thing tying into the rapid pace was the fact that James Franco's scars healed in record-setting time. Those little things like that all added up to me laughing at the movie when we were in the theater.
So why am I still giving it 2 stars?
* Topher Grace. While he still has the voice that embodies his most famous role, that of the geeky kid from "That '70's Show," Eric Foreman, he's the only one who manages to infuse a little hint of sinister flavor. The saddest part is that he is given practically no screen time, that of the villainous behaviour needing to be split between too many characters.
* Venomous Spidey. Watching Peter Parker turn into Pete Wentz (bassist and most familiar face from the band Fall Out Boy) is pretty damn funny. The eyeliner, the hair in the face, the demeanor. We ended up referring to Spidey in the black suit as being "SpiderEmo."
* Bruce Campbell. Why? Because every cameo he does just rocks. Sad that he's looking so old now, though.
All in all, this is that summer movie that you have to go see because it's been drilled into your head that you have to go see it. But it's just too damn boring and soap-operish-ish for me to recommend as being worth your money.

| I didn't like this movie either. The further I get away from it the less I like it. Apart from the horrible script, I think the movie is lazy and sloppy. A good example is the Butler. It takes him 2 movies to tell Harry that. And that's after he's become a poor man's Two-Face lol.. Great review! |

Don't tell her that. I'm beginning to worry about my kid's preferences.
