A documentary for the documentary haters
I bet you're sick of self righteous documentaries that are trying to tell you what you're doing wrong. All the ones that make you feel as if there's something better that you should be doing with your life.
This isn't one of those.
Told from the perspective of a high school teenager who is growing up in a Conservative Republican household and ends up getting involved in a youth committee to help raise awareness about the lack of sex education in her schools, this documentary will simply make you feel very glad that you didn't grow up in Lubbock, Texas.
It has its moments where it feels a little forced, but I believe that's only because of the age of those that were being documented. You really can't ask for much from teenagers.
I ended up feeling this great sense of pride for those gay students profiled, knowing that despite all of the bullsh*t that they had to put up with even without saying anything they chose to make themselves targets. Some might consider that stupid, I think it's one of the most brave and beautiful things that a person can do.
As well as Shelby, who decided to turn her back to much of what was being preached to her and make up her own mind about what kind of Xtian she wanted to be. Here's to hoping that there are more young people like her soon to follow. We've been needing some more of those lately.
