What's the colour of love?
Two things to know about me:
HUGE Cillian Murphy fan.
HUGE Irish film fan.
Finally watched Disco Pigs last night. Honestly, it wasn't as good as I had hoped--it falls into the "doesn't translate as well on screen" category. I would love to see this on stage someday. Hell, I'd love to DO this on stage! Runt would be a fascinating character to delve into.
But the tag is right--it's 90 minutes you will never forget.
Every time I see a new film with Cillian Murphy, my adoration increases! The guy is a phenomenal actor. Everything he does is amazing. There's several incredible moments in this particular movie, but here are a couple of the stand-outs:
Runt asks Pig about the dress she made...it takes him several moments to answer her. But in those moments, all the acting is in his eyes and jaw. You see every emotion he's going through--love, passion, raw desire, tenderness--just through his eyes. And then he finally says in that thick Cork brogue, "Beautiful face, yours." Haunting.
Second...Pig is finally awakening sexually-and Runt is the only girl for him. Obviously. He has blinders on, and there is no one else in his world--no other friend or family. Runt is his EVERYTHING. It's an unhealthy obsession and relationship. But his monologue when he talks of what he wants to do to/with Runt--how they'd first make love--is friggin' amazing. I wish I could find it somewhere so you can read it. But I wasn't able to find it--sorry. :(
None of this is to say that Elaine Cassidy as Runt was anything less than brilliant. She was beautiful and heart-breaking as the saner half of this unhealthy relationship. By the end, you'll just want to take her into your arms and lead her into a new life.
So all in all...pretty good movie. I think it's better as a play, though.
Fair warning for American viewers: Some of you might have a hard time understanding what they're saying. Cillian, especially, has a thick accent. Plus in this film, Pig and Runt have created their own language, so you'll hear that a bit, as well. If you're used to the Irish accent, it won't be a problem. If you're not, you'll just have to listen extra-hard! ;)

| Cillian Murphy is one of those actors where there isn't much to not love about him. He has range, he's incredible to look at... I could go on and on myself. I need to check this one out. It's one of the few of his that I haven't seen. |
