Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)

Why Is This A Classic?
Apparently one of the classics of comedy, this film does not age well. It follows a New York family as they try to build their 'dream house' in Connecticut but find it is a larger endeavor than they ever imagined. I found Cary Grant annoying and foolish while Myrna Loy as his wife seems to sleep walk through the whole film. It is being remade as a sequel to 'Are We There Yet?' starring Ice Cube, now called 'Are We Done Yet?' which is a question I would like to ask of this stupid plot idea.

| I really cannot fathom how someone could really feel this way about a film as genuinely funny as "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House". Cary Grant annoying?!?.....Myrna Loy sleepwalking through the film?!?!?.....WHAT???? Their performances are pitch perfect and in concert with the excellent Melvyn Douglas's constitute a virtual course in comic acting and timing. The script is not only beautifully structured, but is also filled with more real humor than any ten modern comedies combined. Orchestrating all of this is the very deft directorial hand of H.C. Potter. A review I read elsewhere called this film "nearly perfect". I won't go that far, but I will say decidedly that "Mr. Blandings" is unquestionably in the top ten percent of screen comedies. I wish I could offer some sort of help to Jessica Film Junkie, but I know of no really effective treatment for sheer bad taste. |
