Shatter Dead (1994)

Yeah, more like Shatter Dumb
Favorite Movie Quote: "... and we smell really bad."
I know the title was a bit sophomoric, but so was this movie. I took a year's worth of video production in high school and a few years of studio video production at Bellevue Community College and this is right on par with anything I have ever done as far as production value goes. This movie's budget is so low I think I saw the writer/director Scooter McCrae selling oranges off the I-126 in order to fund this movie.
After a woman became pregnant by the Angel of death, the rules of life and death no longer applied. Those who died came back to life not seeking flesh and brains, but equality and normalcy. The living rejected the notion and a war broke out between the living and the dead. Susan must find a way back to her boyfriend through the battlefield of the "Shatter Dead."
This is about the level of amateur porn in quality, but with less sex. There is one graphic sex scene depicting two women together and another scene with a woman being visibly penetrated by something that should never be used in this manner. There is plenty of female nudity to go around and a scene with male full frontal as well. None of that really bugged me (or interested me either as I can see nudity elsewhere if I so desire.) What bothered me was that this was an obviously no-budget movie.
Don't get me wrong, a lot of great independent movies have low budgets, but they make up for it in story, acting and character development. I was a little distracted by the low quality special effects, but it was the lack of decent acting and commitment to the parts that bothered me. Actors and actresses can make a movie like this better by at least delivering their dialog with speed and emotion (even though EXPERIMENT IN TORTURE was about the same in budget and quality, everybody acted with a serious effort), but the cast of this movie didn't seem to take their lines seriously. Stark Raven (Susan) and Robert Wells (the Preacher) were about as lively as Ben Stein in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF or the Model B-9 Environmental Control Robot from LOST IN SPACE. Daniel 'Smalls' Johnson (the boyfriend) and Flora Fauna (dead shower woman) put forth good attempts at correcting their cast mate's robotic acting, but it didn't help much. In the end this was just a bad choice of ways to show blood, gore and nudity with a pocket change budget. It should have been more about the story which was good, but it just wasn't.
