Disturbing

I was still in junior high when I first watched this movie. It was the second thing I'd seen Keanu Reeves in (YOUNGBLOOD was the first, but I didn't even realize he was in that one until later) and I was instantly smitten. He loked like many of the stoner dudes from the local high school that would amble through my neighborhood and go smoke in the alley.

I wasn't quite ready to understand what a brilliant movie this was. I hadn't gotten to an age where I was slacking around, having sex or doing drugs. By the time that I was a senior in high school and watched the movie over again that I saw it for what it was. A clear cut and very ugly display of what the teenage mind will think is acceptable to do in rough situations.

A group of stoners are approached by a friend of theirs one day and told that he killed another one of their friends. When they laugh and don't believe him, he offers to show them where he left the body. After having sex by the river's edge, he got mad at the girl and strangled her to death and then left her naked body uncovered on the ground.

Stunned by the sight of their dead friend and yet still feeling loyalty to the one who committed the murder, the group is torn over what to do. Not really wanting to get involved with the police, most steer clear of the situation. Two others go in completely opposite directions.

Crispin Glover is phenomenal in this movie, something that you'll recognize if you've ever had a friend who was a complete speed freak. Dennis Hopper has an interesting turn as the disabled guy who sells the kids their drugs.

There are moments in this movie where you cringe. You cringe because the circumstances are so horrific that you don't know what else to do. You also cringe because you know that if it had ever happened to a group of your friends, they'd most likely do things in a very similar fashion.

At least, I know it would have been the case amongst my group of friends. Which is perhaps why I recognize this movie for the brilliant and disturbing film that it is.
