Movie Review by The Alpha Craig
September 30th, 2007

Catch and release fishermen are heartless wusses.

This is yet another movie that did poorly at the box offices and I enjoyed. I think part of it is based on the fact that most people were looking for a different, happier ending (plus a 2+ hour length is stretch for any casual moviegoer in this genre.) I won't give it away, but I think it was the ending that suited the movie. This movie was a story with many different layers and a lot going on which tends to distract audiences, myself included. This time there was enough going on, but was tied together enough to where it was like a meal with ingredients that shouldn't have worked together really meshed.

Gray Wheeler is a woman who was preparing to get married to her fiancé Grady when she received word that he passed away on his fishing/bachelor party trip. She had to deal with the loss on the heels of what should have been the happiest day of her life while discovering things about love, life and her fiancé she never imagined possible.

I didn't honestly know what to expect from this movie, it didn't quite seem like a romantic comedy. It didn't quite seem like a "dramedy" either. So I had a completely open mind so that is part of the reason I liked it. The story was simple and complex at the same time. I know the duality of that statement makes me look pretty stupid, but it holds true.

Jennifer Garner (JUNO) as Gray Wheeler was described in a quote, "She seems so perfect. It doesn't surprise me, whenever I saw him (Brady); he seemed so excited like he was on parole." I may have gotten the quote wrong, but the point is that she played Gray as a very strict woman without joy in the beginning and evolved into a free spirit by the end. Growth is something Garner is able to show very well in movies. Timothy Olyphant (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) as Fritz was another grower (not in the show-er vs. grower sense, my ladyperson hipped me to that term) but in the sense that he started off being a very careless, selfish "guy" and grew into a caring "man" by the end. Kevin Smith (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) as Sam impressed me a lot. I have seen him act in his own movies, but that isn't saying much when the character is called "Silent Bob". He showed more depth than I was expecting and it was a pleasant surprise that he was doing more than cracking sex and fart jokes. Juliette Lewis (GRILLED) as Maureen was such a flake as the new-age chick that I couldn't help but like the character even though I am not a fan of hers. Fiona Shaw (BLACK DAHLIA) as Mrs. Douglas was another grower. I really hated her at the beginning of the movie and still hated her at the end, but I saw an effort to be a better person. I liked this movie, but I understand why many people would not. If you go in without preconceived notions on what you think it should be, than that is the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down easier.
