Get your dick beaters off of that!
Director Joe Carnahan, best known for his excellent flick NARC brings us a twisted tale of a mob informant who has a million dollar bounty on his head. Enter in a slew of varied criminal personalities looking to take down Buddy "Aces" Israel and you've got a great chance to muddle things up.
And muddle things up I was almost concerned the picture was headed into doing. The back story on Israel and how he got to be in the perilous situation that the movie finds him in is told from a couple of different angles at a speed so rapid that you're left wondering if you missed something.
It turns out that you probably did but those little worries get ironed out fast and as the movie winds around you end up not caring who started what and with whom. It's more a question of who's going to get him and how. By the time that sh*t hits the fan, you're guaranteed to have picked a favorite hitman or woman even though you might just end up changing your mind when things are finally wound down.
The performances are the highlight of the flick. I was taking bets on how much Affleck was going to suck only to not have to worry about that. (For the sake of me not having to put a f*cking spoiler alert in here, suffice it to say you really don't have to worry about the amount of screen time that he gets.
The next person that I was worried about was Alicia Keys and thankfully her lines are sparing. It's her sidekick who is the winning of the pair. Played by Taraji P Henson, the brilliant little songbird from HUSTLE & FLOW, she radiates strength, humour and toughness.
And Jason Bateman? *giggle* Jason Bateman alone makes the movie worth the $9+ that it takes to see an evening show.
To top it all of, there are The Tremors. If these guys don't go down in screen history as quickly as Randal and Dante, well... it would be a damn shame.
Topping all of it off with some incredible action sequences, a script that pops and delivers some highly quotable remarks and you've got one fine example of why violence in the cinema will always be aces with me.
