Inspired by Hilary Swank? What the...?
Erin Gruwell: The evaluation assignment was to grade yourself on the work you're doing. You gave yourself an F. What's that about?
Andre: It's what I feel I deserve, that's all.
Erin Gruwell: Oh really?
[pause]
Erin Gruwell: You know what this is? This is a f*ck You to me and everyone in this class. I don't want excuses. I know what you're up against. We're all of us up against something. So you better make up your mind, because until you have the balls to look me straight in the eye and tell me this is all you deserve, I am not letting you fail. Even if that means coming to your house every night until you finish the work. I see who you are. Do you understand me? I can see you. And you are not failing.

Yep, this inspiring tale of a teacher who did much more than make a group of at-risk students further their education. This teacher inspired them to change their lives and helped to teach them tolerance and compassion, instead of hate and prejudice.
Yes, this story is similar to many of the inspirational stories of past movies/books, however, I've never seen one that used the holocaust to teach a bunch of Black, Asian, and Hispanic gang members to get along and grow into respectful young adults. This movie had my boyfriend, my sister, my mom and her man, and me all in tears in several parts.
Of course I would have never guessed that I'd be so inspired by Hilary Swank, but I suppose it was the story more than the actors that did that. There were parts that I didn't like...Patrick Dempsey made me ask: Why is he even in the movie? He's an ignorant, jerk of a husband in my opinion to this teacher that was just trying to make a difference in a handful of student's lives.
Anyway, it's a pretty good flick. I'd definitely recommend it, so give it a look-see why don'tcha?

| I think Patrick Dempsey was there to show how much she really was sacrificing to be there for those kids. I don't know if that part of the story was true but I wouldn't be surprised. And I think that his reaction is not really that unrealistic or really that he's a jerk. He's just not as devoted to those kids. |
