Movie Review by Jarrod
September 14th, 2007

'Hatchet' is yet another bland, extremely gory horror offering that at least has a very straightforward title, which pretty much tells you what you can expect from it, even though a hatchet is not used very much in the myriad death scenes, some of which are creatively nasty. Kane Hodder, who has played Jason Voorhees three times, most recently in Jason X, back in 2001, is Victor Crowley, a mutant hillbilly of some sort who lives in the swamps of New Orleans, and has a jolly old time slicing up tourists who get stranded when their boat breaks down. Why would these people even come to a creepy swamp in the first place? Well, it doesn't matter, most of them die quickly and gruesomely, there is a lot of running and screaming and crying. The characters behave stupidly, and we care nothing about them, so they more or less get what they deserve. Hodder looks menacing, which is enough I suppose, and there is a Robert Englund cameo, and Tony Todd (from Candyman) makes an appearance, so there are plenty of references to other horror films and franchises that genre fans will likely enjoy.

The violence is rather extreme (the movie initially had an NC-17 rating), and there is no shortage of female nudity, and that may constitute an effective horror film for some. Not for me, though. Admittedly, it never takes itself that seriously, and I kind of enjoyed its excesses, but I watch so many horror films, so many bad or just plain mediocre ones, that a good one really seems rare, and sticks out quite boldly. 'Hatchet' I would put in the mediocre category.
