Movie Review by Tim
January 4th, 2008

It's made of real fake gold.

Notes On A Scandel is a simple masterpiece that blew me away. This drama exemplifies how easy a script can be, yet work out so well and all come together so nicely. Great plot, Great cast and a Great drama.

Cate Blanchett plays Sheba Hart a married woman and teacher who starts having an affair with a 15 year old student of hers. Things are going wonderful until her best friend and co-worker Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) sees the affair in action. Barbara is an older woman which is a stickler for playing by the rules.

Barbara tells her that she will not report her as long as she ends the affair immediately. Well Sheba doesn't and between that and Barbara feeling like Sheba has not been the best friend she thought she was lately..mainly because Barbara's cat dies and Sheba will not skip her sons play to go to the vet with her...she feels the need to leak the information which comes out hard for Sheba. She is fired, arrested and even attacked by the boys mother.

This is what I find ironic. Women to this day say that there is discrimination against women STILL. How come when a female teacher has sex with a student at school she gets at the most 2 years in prison....BUT if a male teacher has sex with a student he gets 10+ years?? I wonder!

Besides that what makes this film special is the cast. Judi Dench who we all know from several James Bond films playing the character of M, is just fantastic. She plays a battle axe of a teacher that everyone hates but is well respected among the students. The people at the school definitely know not to f*ck with her. Cate Blanchett which I am most familiar with her role as Galadriel in The Lord Of the Rings trilogy looks sexy as hell and just gives a remarkable performance as well. The chemistry of the two women are just phenomenal.

The other thing that is great about this film is the story. How many boys watch this film and think that it would have been great to have sex with one of their teachers. Also it has a bit of darkness added to it as Barbara is not he most stable, normal person. I'm not going to go into details about that but there is some skeletons in her closet.

I really liked this one more then I thought I would. I read a ton of great reviews on it but I had to give my two cents worth.
