Great for the kiddies... mildly amusing for adults
There were people snickering behind their hands when this movie was announced, those who were laughing at the fact that Madonna was involved in it and dismissing it automatically due to that fact. I remembered that she was in the cast only after the movie was over. At some point in the month that my Midget was pestering me to take her to the movie, I'd forgotten who the cast was. Hey! I've been busy, ok?!?
First of all, I'm very happy with two things: Freddie Highmore, the young man who was in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and FINDING NEVERLAND was in the movie. The kid has charm and doesn't manage to do that annoying child actor thing. Of course, neither did the woman who plays his grandmother in the film, Mia Farrow, a former child actor herself. I loved both of them in this.
A high spirited boy who thrives off the stories of the adventures that his missing grandfather went through, discovers that the family home and land that it's on are going to be repossessed. He goes in search of finding his grandfather's lost ruby treasure, the only problem lying in the fact that there's no clues as to where the rubies were hidden.
In comes the tale of how his grandfather met a group of people who were "smaller than a tooth," and off goes Arthur to go look for them. In an interesting transformation, he enters their world looking like one of them, meeting a headstrong princess warrior, her little brother, an aging king, an evil dude wanting to make with the evil dude mischief and a whole slew of other characters (including one voiced by Snoop Dogg, if you can only imagine).
The movie has its boring spots where I just ceased to care what was going on. But I like action and my tastes run to the extreme. For my 6 year old daughter, however, the action was perfectly on par for her. She sat quietly and stared at the screen raptly. I would highly recommend this movie for people with young children who like things to be exciting without being too scary.
As for the issue with Madonna, I couldn't even place that it was her voice and needed to be told with the credits, so anyone who is still harboring issues over her involvement should just shut up. Mainly I enjoyed the vocal performance of Jason Bateman, a former child actor who is fully bursting into his own as an adult. Everything he's done recently has been done fearlessly and personally? That excites me more than anything.

| I'm waiting for the DVD for this one. I didn't think it looked interesting enough for my kids to sit through it (6 and 4 yrs old). I love Luc Besson and David Bowie though, and that interested me enough. Great review. |
