Boring.....Not Edward Norton's best..
Favorite Movie Quote: "Every gesture has a meaning. See how she covers her face with the cloth? She is mourning her misfortune."
Although Beautifully shot with the locations, it was not enough to keep me entertained. I made it to the 1:45 mark before I hit the fast forward button to get to the VERY predictable ending.
Again this is a film that I am having a hard time placing what went wrong or what was missing. I think one thing that I did not like was that the characters are poorly developed. The audience is thrown into Walter and Kitty's marriage, and although you know that Walter truly loves her you never get to see any acts that highlight his love for her in the beginning.
Liev Schreiber was even a disappointment for me , I liked him ever since I saw Phantoms but he is pretty hit or miss. Great in The Hurricane and Sphere but fails in others.
Its almost like you are missing a couple of vital characters from the film. Besides the Chinese officer and the guard that follows Kitty around you really do not meet or learn anything about any of the Chinese people which was disappointing. I understand the plot revolves around Walter and Kitty's love being built or re-built but they film does center around disease in Chinese villages. It would have been nice to see the disease in a more realistic state, with some of the horrific images that cholera is known to produce.
Even though you are supposed to see Kitty start to fall in love with her husband after a very rocky marriage you do not get the same impression of love as you do with a film like The Notebook. I mean you can tell her feelings change for him but the performance just wasn't strong enough for the film to be focused on that.
I wouldn't recommend watching it unless there is NOTHING else on.
