Movie Review by Zara
November 18th, 2007

Hard to believe that it's been 30 years since the first ROCKY movie was released. Or maybe not. I'd still like to think that 30 years is a long time, even if I've been alive for slightly longer than that.

Most people made fun of the concept of this movie before even watching it. Seeing Stallone, well into his 60's (although they kept his age a question mark in the movie, perhaps knocking off 5 years or so), trying to fight a guy in his prime. I don't like it when movies are automatically dismissed by the cinematically righteous. Call me a fangirl if you'd like, I know I am, but I also like to give everything a fair shake unless it compromises some personal interior integrity. (Which is rare.)

The movie isn't bad. It doesn't have that underdog feeling that the original had, but I will hand it to Stallone for being able to make fun of himself for making the movie as much as still retain the "anything can happen if you really want it bad enough" feeling that ROCKY is associated with.

You don't really catch that feeling until the scene where he gives his son a speech about it not being about how hard you can hit but how hard you can get hit and still keep moving forward. It's a simple message, but it's as true as anything can get.

And the fight scene has still got some fire in its belly, even if you start off laughing. (Again good when Milo says "They're not laughing anymore" as a prompt for Balboa to keep going.) The main problem that I had with it (aside from allowing Mike Tyson to come anywhere NEAR the set) is that the guy that they get to play the heavy weight champion in no way physically looks like one. He's the least threatening looking actor that they could have gotten to play the role.

An entertaining little Sunday afternoon watch.
