Boxers should not be in films like rappers
I rushed to the store this week to pick up Rocky Balboa. This is the first DVD that I actually purchased rather then rented in a while. I missed it while it was in the theatre I just never got around to go , and I really try to avoid the theatre at all cost because I always sit beside the most annoying person in the world that wants to laugh at all the stuff that is not meant to be funny and whispers to their friend the whole time.
So I watched the film and I liked it pretty well. I thought Sly Stallone was great, he really brought some good drama to the film as he normally did with the Rocky series. The film was written sort of weird. I went into it thinking that I would get to see more then one match, but all you see is the fight at the end against the champion. The first half of the film is nothing but character build up from where Rocky V left off.
The dialogue is good but not great, and besides Rocky and Pauly the acting is not good at all. Antonio Tarver is just horrible.....Sly said he wanted a boxer instead of an actor because he thought it would be easier to mold an actor into a believable champ. Next time just watch Cinderella Man and you should learn very quick that a strong actor can play a champion fine.
There was a very cool incorporation of past characters and music into the film, mostly from the first Rocky. However the ending fight sequence is story boarded almost identically to the fight with Drago in part 4.
I will tell you what is extraordinarily done is the filming and photography. Between the quick cuts back to previous Rocky films and switching from black and white to vibrant color Sly did a great job of bringing a special feel to the film. The final match actually looks like you are watching ESPN, a real fight....it really is remarkable.
The ending to me was a tad week it was not quite the dramatic goodbye to one of my hero's as a kid and to a character that millions love and care about. I felt as if Sly got to say goodbye to Rocky's fan but the fans did not get to say goodbye to Rocky.
However if you are a Sly or Rocky fan then I would definitely sit down and watch this film. Rocky is an iconic character of film history and I am sad in away that it really is over!

| I was a little curious about this one after the critics were saying it was actually good. I still don't have time for it right away. Maybe soon. |

| I had to see this one......when a 200lb (hard bastard) heavy weight says your gonna go watch the Rocky movie because "It's your f*ckin' heritage" I tend not to argue. As far as Rocky movies go I really liked this one, it was almost touching to see poor old Rock after he'd lost Adrian, it almost had my lip quiverin'. |
