Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie
October 26th, 2007

Messy and Disgusting

I know Richard Linklater is a brilliant filmmaker and I know he can do better than this. Just look at 'Dazed and Confused' or the 'Before Sunrise/Sunset' films. This is a man who understands the human condition and the messed up nature of friendship.

Unfortunately, he spends most of this film trying to gross out the audience. We see cows being killed and there is a lot of talk about how manure makes it into beef patties. Yet with all these 'facts' intended on convincing Americans to stop eating burgers, we forget to care about the characters.

The characters are a jumble. From the illegal immigrants working in the meat packing factory to the intelligent teenager working at a burger shop who is convinced to rebel by her gen X uncle (Ethan Hawke reliving his glory days), to the corporate shark on an eye-opening trip to find out the truth about the meat. In the end we are left with a lot of questions, disgust and boredom from this film that refuses to be anything. Not thought-provoking, but disturbing, not character-driven, but frustrating.
