A Good Year

And it's Tuesday again and with it being Tuesday are new releases. Today's subject at hand is "A Good Year" starring Russel Crowe and Albert Finney, directed by Ridley Scott.

The film follows Max, a hardnosed, english stock trader. One day he recieves a telegraph in the mail informing him that his beloved uncle Henry has died and since he had no legal will, being his closest living relative, he inheirates a vinyard in the south of France. During his stay to rennovate the villa and vineyard in order to sell it, he becomes intoxicated with memories of his youth and slowly starts to realize: what good is all the money in the world if you're not going to spend it?

This movie got the crap panned out of it by most the critics that I read. My chief complaint with this movie is it drags in certain places, but a movie like this I imagine is meant to drag. After all, one of the central themes in this movie being "stop and smell the grapes." It seems to have a dog-day laziness to it (but in a good way) and shows some beautiful shots of Southern France.

One other problem that I had was Russel Crowe's character. He's supposed to be a self-centered, ego maniac. He's supposed to be a huge, ruthless, money grubbing jerk. The problem is, you kind of like him through out the movie. I think this movie would have been a bit more moving had you really despised him and seen his progression then.

That being said, his character is witting, charming and likable and makes the movie easier to watch. ::shrug:: I guess you can't have it all.

So, who's going to like this film? Well, I imagine if you like Russel Crowe, you'll like this film. It might sound wierd, but if you liked the movie "Under a Tuscan Sun", you might like this one as well, if just for the fact they have some wonderful scenery shots in both films. Again, it's difficult, because this isn't your usual Ridley Scott film, but I'd still recommend it.

Thanks for the review! I've been wanting to see this since discovering Marion Cotillard was in it. I love her!
