Either laughing or cringing

This movie was such a huge sensation, with large groups of people who had no idea who Sasha Baron Cohen was going to watch a film based on seeing the multiple internet ads, radio ads and television commercials about the film. Made to look like a hilarious comedy and downplaying the graphic moments, the movie fooled those with the minimal movie knowledge that most of the public has.

I'm a big fan of the Ali G Show, especially the interview that he did with Victoria and David Beckham sometime after the birth of their first child. It's a prime example of how Cohen can play out a character without showing a hint of breaking it. He does this with Borat well.

However, and I'm not sure if it's because I find the character so ugly and stupid, not breaking character here doesn't play out as a huge plus. There are moments in the movie which are quite funny. When tempered with the moments that are being gross for the sake of being gross you end up with a wildly uneven movie. It's not really supposed to be a statement on the social wrongs of our states when Cohen and his friend are chasing each other around in the nude. While that scene is extremely funny, it just doesn't play well against the moments like the rodeo or in the van with the University of South Carolina students. In those moments I can only feel embarassed for what the other people in my country are like.

As a sidenote, Cohen either has a large ego or a large c*ck based on the length of that black bar during that wrestling scene. But it's also a good measure of how he's willing to try and push the limits... just not that much. For me, you either go whole hog or you don't start a tango that you can't finish.

I literally had to strain to see and breathe I was laughing so hard during the wrestling scene. And the look on Allen Combs face after the rubber fist comment, priceless. But I'm there with you regarding it being uneven.
