Movie Review by B Movie Ben
July 15th, 2007

The world is full of sluts on skates.

I like Sean Penn and I feel that he really did a great job in this film. However, I feel that the film failed miserably when the focus was not on him.

There is a reasonable tendency to compare the film to the 1950 version with Broderick Crawford. That version was far superior in every respect. The characters came alive and were real, while her I could feel nothing towards them.

I could not feel the anguish that Jack (Jude Law) was going through as he was forced to choose between his people and his employer. This is one of the most important aspects of the story and it just wasn't there in this film.

Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children) was a scary presence on the screen at all times. Every time you saw him, you couldn't help but wonder what might be coming. He played his part well.

This film was full of stars - Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Clarkson, and Anthony Hopkins - that just weren't used effectively.

Get the 1950 version to see this powerful story told the way it should be.
