Movie Review by Misty

What a wierd freakin' flick!

I just watched this movie last night and it was a trip. I actually watched the unrated version that, I guess, had a twisted alternate ending...and I couldn't select an ending it was only the alternate ending, I guess. Anyway it was wierd.

Nicolas Cage plays a cop that decides to take some time off after not being able to save a woman and young girl from thier burning car. Soon after his 'vacation' starts he recieves a letter from his ex-fiance that just disappeared. That's where the wierd part starts. Why would this woman, after running out on him so many years ago, just all of a sudden send him a letter? She needs his help, of course. After consulting with his friend at the police station (who warns him not to even bother with this chick) he still decides that it's something he needs to do. I guess if I got a letter from an ex about their child missing and I was a cop...I'd probably try to help too.

Once he eventually gets onto this strange island that she lives on, he starts to realize that there is something very strange going on. Nobody claims to know the little girl that's gone missing and everyone's talking the poor guy in circles. To top it off most of the people living on the island are women and they have wierd beliefs and rituals.

The end tripped me out, because of course I automatically thought it would be a happy ending and boy was I wrong! So, if you like it when the end isn't so sweet you'll probably like this movie. It kind of reminded of the Village though, except more creepy with just women and bees...lots of bees.

It wasn't the best flick I've seen Nicolas Cage in, but it was just wierd enough to keep my attention...so check it out and see for yourself. It definately made me want to check out the older british version to see the differences and similarities in the two...I'll let you know after I've seen it, how that one goes!

I wasn't going to watch this movie until I found out that LaBute directed it. Now my interest is somewhat piqued.
