Movie Review by Zara
August 16th, 2009

Woody Allen used to be good when he inserted himself into the movies that he was making. I think it was around the time that he was about the same age or only 10 years older than his muses. Having him be in this movie was amusing as a side gag, where he pretends to be Scarlett Johansson's father (in reality, he's old enough to be her grandfather even though I know that he has children that are younger than her).

It could have been a contender given different people and a more cynical, more darkly humourous director. Allen has none of this panache as a mature director. Taking the story of a dead hot-to-trot reporter and having him fight his way out of the boat on the way to the land of the undead in order to chase down one last scoop is actually kind of a cool idea.

However, Allen miscasts it terribly by being in the movie. ScarJo is horrid as someone trying to pull of comedy and Hugh Jackman takes on the role as if it were something he was doing on stage. In fact, the majority of the dialog and situations in the movie might be better played out on the stage the way that Allen directs the action. As a movie, however, it is bogged down by the wrong people doing all the wrong things with some right material. It's like accidentally getting bleach in with the colored clothing in the wash. Some people might like the white splotches, but it's more of a niche thing than something legitimately cool.
