THE LONG, LONG TRAILER IS MISSING A WHEEL
Released in 1954 - THE LONG, LONG TRAILER (TLLT) was very much like watching a very, very long, long episode (90 minutes) of the highly-popular 'I LOVE LUCY' TV Show of the early 1950's.
Now, don't get me wrong - I can certainly enjoy watching an extended episode of 'I LOVE LUCY', now, and again. I mean, the show was a classic example of a TV Sitcom from the 50's and it was, unquestionably, quite entertaining to watch. But I found that with TLLT there seemed to be something slightly out of kilter with its story - Something oddly unbalanced.
It seemed to me that TLLT was missing a vitally important element in its 'Comedy Relief' Department. And this noticeably absent key element was undoubtedly the thing that prevented this feature-length 'I LOVE LUCY' flick from being rated any higher by me, as a true classic of comedy, just as I would have rated the TV Show.
What I'm talking about here is, of course, the much needed input of Actors WILLIAM FRAWLEY and VIVIAN VANCE, as Fred and Ethel Mertz, into TLLT's comic story. Believe me, these 2 characters were most desperately needed several times throughout the course of TLLT as a buffer to counter the often amusing, but sometimes annoying, domestic squabbles of Nicky and Tracy (aka Ricky and Lucy Ricardo).
I mean, let's face it - Without Fred and Ethel, Nicky and Tracy, on their own, just didn't cut it. They most certainly didn't.
Back in the early 1950's LUCILLE BALL may have been unanimously voted, time and again, 'The Queen of the TV Sitcoms', but the truth is that this particular queen without her loyal hand-maiden/side-kick, VIVIAN VANCE, as Ethel Mertz, around to cushion her blows, well, she just wasn't anywhere near as amusing, or comical standing on her own as one might have thought, or expected. At least that's the way it was from my perspective.
All-In-All - TLLT was fairly entertaining as far as Comedies goes, but it certainly wasn't great.
