Movie Review by Zara
December 18th, 2008

I didn't really like this film and I didn't really hate it either. I'm not a part of the Phillip K Dick fan club, but I do like Linklater most of the time and I was happy to see him working with Rory Cochran again.

I get the underlying meaning of the movie, but there's just not a lot of substance to it. We already know that big brother is watching us, we've been given a television show which mocks procedures that the Bush administration has already put into action in reality. This is no longer a dream. This is no longer frightening science fiction. Sadly, what was shocking and eye-opening to those who read Dick back in the day is just a average moment of Americans having their freedoms taken from them and most of the time with them stupidly, willingly handing them over.

The best part of the movie is - of course - Robert Downey Jr. For the obvious reasons (his personal history and his inhumanly graceful ability to act), which makes him a bit of a slam dunk in the film. Woody is funny as well and the two of them reacting to one another is fun in a childish kind of way, especially if you've ever had burnout friends like them, which I have.

But the just slightly present vision of a cartoon, these lines over the images that were filmed normally, is distracting more than enlightening to the tale. I don't find it more compelling because of the medium that they used. Most of the time I wanted to grab some Windex and see if I could scrub the picture on the TV clean. Perhaps I just didn't get it, but I can say easily that I liked some performances enough to give it a mediocre rating, but didn't like the movie overall.

I actually watch this movie for the rotoscoping thingy, but 10 minutes in the novelty wore off and I was left with a substanceless movie, Downey and Woody played stoners, and did a pretty good job, and you'd expect them too given the amount of drugs they've done.

Funny, I went back to read my review and couldn't understand why I gave it 4 stars. My review basically says it was confusing and hard to sit through...but I liked it! LOL. I think I'm too nice. What do you think?
