Finally.
Strangers With Candy was almost never released to theaters. There has been a lot of speculation as to why the release was held for such a long time, the main reason being that there were several brands and icons that the film had not aquired the rights to display. Whatever the reason, I was ecstatic to find out they were releasing this movie.
Based on a too short-lived comedy central show that I am actually a big fan of, Strangers With Candy stars Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a 40 year old recovering drug addict who returns to high school for a second start. The entire film, written by Sedaris and her costars Paul Dinello (who plays the childlike art teacher Mr. Geoffery Gellinak) and the ever hysterical Stephen Colbert (Playing the repressed Mr. Noblet), is a parody remeniscent of a classic eighties after school special.
Usually I am not a fan of television shows being made into movies. A joke that is funny for twenty-two minutes often has trouble sustaining itself for ninety plus. But this film manages to keep the over the top comedy from becoming stale and boring. Though, as with the television show, the jokes are sometimes reduced to vulgar and sometimes offensive references, it's done in such a way that you find yourself laughing rather than rolling your eyes.
And of course, they drag out a slew of celebrities to round out the supporting cast, including: Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dan Hedaya, Allison Janney and Ian Holm. While this can be an irritating habit in films of this nature, they actually all integrate wonderfully to the original television show cast. Astutely directed as well by Paul Dinello, Strangers With Candy is a lesson not to be missed.

| This is why they have differnet flavors of candy - I lasted 20 minutes and didn't laugh once before I switched to In the Heat of the Night, which I have seen about 10 times. Amy Sedaris is not funny, just wierd! |
