Movie Review by Jarrod July 4th, 2006

Strangers with Candy' is based on a short-lived show that was cancelled fairly swiftly by Comedy Central, though one of its stars, Stephen Colbert, now enjoys success with the brilliant Colbert Report. Colbert is a funny guy, which makes me wonder why how he came up with some of the lame ideas in this haphazardly humorous movie, better in its first 30 minutes than in the remaining 67. Amy Sedaris is Jerri Blank, a former convict, drug addict, and hooker who returns home one day to find her dad (Hedaya) in a coma. Hated by her stepmother Sara (Rush) and her jock of a stepbrother Derrick (Joseph Cross), she decides to turn her life around, and re-enrolls in high school, heeding the advice of Dr. Putney (Holm), the family physician. As a freshman at Flatpoint High, she makes a couple of friends, interacts with oddballs like art teacher Geoffrey Jellineck (Dinello), more-or-less openly gay science instructor Chuck Noblet (Colbert), and moronic principal Blackman (Gregory Holliman). Noblet is trying to prepare a team for the science fair, competent enough to take on the state champion Roger Beekman (Broderick). Jerri spends most of her time getting ridiculed, and one cannot help but see why, with her bucky teeth, atrocious attire, bad hair, and cheap make-up. I suppose we should feel sorry for her, but she is so annoying and hopeless that we cannot do anything but grow tired of her. Sedaris plays this character to perfection, but there comes a point in which it seems Jerri is better suited for a sketch show, meted out in smaller doses. Colbert and Dinello are interesting at first, but become obnoxious, too. 'Strangers with Candy' is vulgar, and I typically find vulgarity amusing, but this didn't work for me, and after that initial half hour, I sat quietly waiting for more laughs. They never arrived. I never watched the show during its brief run, but it does have a cult following, and maybe those folks will enjoy it more than I did.
