Movie Review by Seth
June 16th, 2006

I don't believe in God, I believe in Science.

I figured this film would fall into one of two categories: brilliant or really, really stupid. I didn't expect much middle ground when it came to a follow-up effort from Team Dynamite.

Apparently I was wrong. NACHO LIBRE does indeed end up somewhere in the middle; short of "come get some ham, Tina", but well above the scene of Jack Black getting thrown by a bull that we all saw in the trailer.

Black is his usual good comedic self, but still not as funny as he was in HIGH FIDELITY. His accent was at times a little off and he sometimes sounded more Italian than Mexican. The real star, in my opinion, is newcomer Héctor Jimenez, who really steals a lot of the scenes. His love of corn and propensity to scream alone made the movie worth watching.

Though I both anticipated and watched this film through a NAPOLEON DYNAMITE filter, the movie is enjoyably un-"GOSH!" and stands on its own. In fact, the style reminded me more of a Wes Anderson film than anything else, though not nearly as crisp. But it was sure to focus on the little details (notice the salads), which I love in good filmmaking.

In the end, it's a good sophomore effort by the Hess brothers and they have definitely earned themselves my viewing their next film.

FYI- The Hesses are a husband-wife team, not brothers. SOK

Doh. Consider myself humbled. Thanks for the clarification.
