Movie Review by Denise

Because of HBO

I saw The Break-Up in the theater, and today while killing time I found the ending on HBO, which made me decide to see what the mood was about it on here. I see what I expected-- people expecting Vince Vaughn to crack them up the way he and the Butterscotch Stallion did in Wedding Crashers, and that just doesn't happen here. But is that a bad thing? I don't necessarily think so.

The Break-Up is a heartwrenchingly realistic drama, almost a slice of life, of how communication problems and pride (oh, yeah, a whole mess of pride) destroy relationships. The humor, I would even argue, is also realistic because we use some of our most hilarious material (generally unintentionally) in arguments, and most of us do have funny friends. I have funny friends, anyway. And they make me laugh, even when my life has gone to New Jersey and I want to take too many Lunesta.

The acting is great and luckily Joey Lauren Adams isn't in it too much (can't take her voice. But I'm sure she's a very nice person), and it was so good to see Peter Billingsly again. Aniston and Vaughn are just plain good together.

The hope offered in the ending scene isn't hope for the couple to reunite; rather, it's more of an optimistic encouragement to the audience that we, too, can get over loss (loss of a home, a relationship, whatever), grow from that loss, and make a better life, not despite that loss but because of it.

If you haven't seen The Break-Up, see it, but not on "Girl Cosmo Night"-- see it when your heart is broken or when you feel introspective -- yes, see it at those times you normally feel like getting into a drama.

I also liked the ending...I thought it was true to life, except in those cases when two people just totally hate each other.

I agree, think of this, if Vaughn and Aniston, were not in it, or if the producers miscast, it would have sucked.
