Movie Review by Seth C
June 5th, 2006

"The Break-Up" has been marketed as a romantic comedy, however when producer/star/story-creater Vince Vaughn is absent from the screen, the film goes from somewhat amusing to just clearly sad. The film, which shows a couple bitterly trying to hurt each other after they have decided to leave each other, however stay living with together, feels long and at times agonizing to watch. Vaughn is on as always and Jennifer Aniston proves again to me that she is a true movie star; in certain scenes my heart broke just watching her face as she processed the things happening around her. All the other cast members, however, are wasted especially the always entertaining Jason Bateman, who I believe is only seen in two or three scenes. It is nice to see Jon Favreau and Vaughn share some more screentime, although sadly it feels more "Made" than "Swingers," if you know what I mean.

This film isn't bad, just extremely hard to watch. The ending works and I enjoyed it, which if you know me, means a lot (i.e. I usually hate all endings except for "Chasing Amy's" brilliant conclusion), but the film as a whole felt unexpected. Either this film is really funny and I have no sense of humor, or the marketing folks just failed at their jobs and this film is really a bitter drama with a joke or two. I don't know, but I do know it's slightly worth checking out.

You are right, the trailer made us think it would be a comedy, but rarely was there comedy in the movie. It had a lot of sad parts, but I wouldn't say it was hard to watch. It was however, a girly type movie that most guys probably wouldn't want to sit through anyways.
