Movie Review by Ezra
March 12th, 2007

Talk about revitalizing a genre! This is by far the best and most realistic Western in years, if not of all time. I'm not particularly a fan of the genre, though I have loved a few - Unforgiven, The Searchers, The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid come to mind, and Jim Jarmusch's revisionist Dead Man is one of my all-time favorite films - but this Australian film scripted by rock legend Nick Cave certainly stands out. In addition to its gorgeously gritty cinematography and unflinching realism, especially when it comes to the nasty, nasty violence that was a part of everyday life in that time and place, the film also boasts an incredible cast: Danny Huston, Guy Pearce, John Hurt, Emily Watson and Ray Winstone are all terrific. This is definitely not a film for everyone (as I've mentioned, it is extremely nasty), but if your stomach is up to the task, the rewards are many.
