I heard the comparisons to Holes so I read the book and was very disappointed. The book and the movie, despite their "kid power" message, severely underestimates kids. The jokes are not funny, the dialogue is terrible and the acting from the majority of the cast is just plain bad. Check out Holes, Peter Pan(2003) or Monster House for a better example of good family movies that don't try to dumb it down.
