Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

There was a time.....
This is a "wait for it" or "pay-off" movie. By that I mean that you thrown a lot of bits and pieces, showing only small portions of the puzzle but never showing what the pictures in meant to be. A series of unrelated scenes are strung together like odd knick knacks on a child's Christmas chain ornament. They all look nice, but you are not sure what they have to do with each other. I don't want to give away too much, but it is well worth the wait.
Two gambling bookies were killed on two separate occasions. A man told a younger man a story of another man losing everything including his life and his family's lives over a bad bet at the horse races before breaking of the younger mans neck. None of this would seem relevant to Slevin Kelevra who just lost his job, found his girlfriend cheating on him, and was mugged on his way to his friend, Nick Fisher's apartment. Once settled in, he found out that Nick owed sizable amounts of money to two different bookies who have mistaken Slevin for Nick. Slevin now needs to figure out how to get out of the situation alive.
There are a lot of different plot twists that don't seem to fit in, but give it time and it all fits perfectly together. This is one of the movies where they really had the story thought out over and over again in order to make sure it is consistent and all of the bases are covered. This is where having multiple writers and/or a good script editing staff comes into play. All I can really say, without ruining this, is that good things come to those who wait.
Josh Hartnett (SIN CITY) as Slevin Kelevra didn't seem to make any serious attempts to tell people he wasn't Nick Fisher. It does make sense later on, after all a name is not that important if you are thought to owe over a hundred grand right? For that reason I liked this character. Morgan Freeman (EVAN ALMIGHTY) as The Boss and Sir Ben Kingsley (YOU KILL ME) as The Rabbi were both the same basic character, cold heartless, ruthless, mean, intelligent and paranoid. They both played the roles of men of power hidden in their inscrutable towers of death and deceit. Lucy Liu (WATCHING THE DETECTIVES) as Lindsey was flaky and seemed to have more answers than she should have had. She almost seems to be "in on it", whatever "it" is. Ultimately I just think the direction that the director or she had her go in was not in keeping with the character. Bruce Willis (PLANET TERROR) as Goodkat/Smith was good for the amount of camera time he had, but unfortunately his time was split up with the other non-lead cast. Everybody was basically entertaining, but like with a Pollack painting, there was just way too much going on to appreciate any one person. This is just one of those movies where it seriously helps to have a good deal of patience, because it does pay off in the end.
