Movie Review by Seth
February 9th, 2007

Going to Hell for this one.

It seemed when this movie came out, that people were just afraid to say anything bad about it. This film did not touch me, it did not make me more spiritual, and most importantly it didn't enlighten me intellectually.

I did not grow up in a christian home and know very little about Jesus or anything christian related, other than what i've read about or saw on tv. When this movie was released, a christian girl friend of mine begged me to go watch it. All I saw was a man being beaten to death. THAT'S IT. The movie did not focus on anything important. It did not talk about the man's life or teachings. Going in not a christian, you're just left with your same old bloody slasher movie. Talk up all you would like, it's not Jesus on the screen, it's that guy from the Count of Monte Cristo. G-d did not make the movie. Drunk anti-Semitic Mad Max did. I did like the way the movie was shot, but if I want to see a good looking movie directed by Mel Gibson, I'll just watch Braveheart again.

Ok take away the fact that you don't like Mel and you don't care much for the topic......did you not at least think that the film was well made?

You just don't like it because you're a Jew and Mel hurt your people.

I am very sorry that you did not grow up in a Christian home, but how could you not walk away from this movie and take something with you. You have to have some basic knowledge of God and Jesus. You have to know the fact that He went through all of this to save you! That is the point of this movie. He endured this for all of us because He loves us. Would you ever do any of that for anyone? Especially for generations of people like yourself who don't believe?

No way. I took something away alright. I don't like watching anyone get tortured for two hours. I guess I'd buy into the "He endured this for all of us because He loves us" aspect of it more if he didn't know he was going to rise up three days later and sit at the right hand of his father. Lots of human beings have gone through what he did and they just got screwed. The Spanish Inquisition, The Rape of the Congo, the Holocause, Apartheid. All of these tragedies had heroes. History is filled with instances of incredible sacrifice where the people involved didn't have resurrection in their back pocket. They just suffered and died.

I liked this movie a lot more than you did but I thought a lot of your points were dead on. I could have used a lot more of what was beautiful about Jesus' life -- not just what was terrible about his death -- to make the movie more relevant.
