Movie Review by Chris
April 24th, 2008

Inside Man was certainly one of the best heist movies I have seen in a long time. If you have never seen the movie then yes, its a heist movie, if you have, then I dont know what the hell it is, but it was great. Directed by none other than Spike Lee, the man who brought us Summer of Sam, Spike makes a film in which is smart, cool and not only deals with the problem at hand, which is a supposed bank robbery, but blends it with problems in todays world. Like racism and hate for foreign countries.

Led by Dalton Russel, a large group of men dressed up as painters decide to rob a bank. Supposedly by Dalton, his plan is perfect, meaning there will be no flaws in the execution. Detective Keith Frazier and his partner are called down to the robbery as negotiators, so they must find whos leading this and quickly. But, the chairman and owner of the branch of banks has a small problem, in a safety deposit box is an item which can get him locked up forever, and it must be found or go missing before anyone finds it.

Denzel Washington always puts on an amazing performance with his roles, because half of the roles he plays fit him perfectly. I mean, if you look at Man on Fire, you can see that Denzel really made that part convincing and real. So, as Detective Keith, he gives us more then a character on paper. Keith is smart and real, because he seems to erase all the difficulties in his life to concentrate on the case in front of him. Very real and smart. Clive Owen is a errific actor, Derailed and Shoot Em Up are two great accomplishments from him. The thing that Clive does is all of his characters are smart, but simple. As Dalton, he doesnt repeat himself and hes very down to earth. Not to mention that in the end, the plan he comes up with is absoulutely brilliant and I did not see it coming at all.

Spike Lee is like an idol to me, Summer of Sam is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and not only does he do a great job with the directing, but with the issues he sets up in the movie. The main story revolves around this bank robbery, but at the same time he puts elements of post 9/11, racism and just brings up subjects which are just real. For example, a foreign man is sent out with a case on his chest, when the hood is removed he is wearing a turban and one of the cops yell " Hes Alquedian, its a bomb". One great example. And many of the NYPD lie throughout the movie, even though the other characters dont seem to notice.

This film was done very realistically. Writer Russel Gewirtz studies police officers and real criminals to create a real experience with the situation that unfolds. The cops and SWAT move and act in a real fashion, and the characters are brain smart, something we dont see much in modern film making. So, overall, the writer created a smart and funny script which really made the movie what it is.
