Movie Review by Chris
August 17th, 2007

So, remakes arent exactly the best films ever made. Now that were getting remake after remake, its kind of good to see that finally a remake has come along that is actually really good. Alexandre Aja has remade The Hills Have Eyes from the original Wes Craven film of the same name, and its quite a risk because the original was a pretty good scare. Wes Craven is along for this project though, so he is producing it instead of directing it. While this version is more gorier, scarier and cooler visually then the original, it still offers up a good hour and a half of scares and great makeup effects.

While traveling in a trailer to California through the New Mexico Desert, a family is misled to a shortcut going to nowhere by the owner of an isolated gas station and wrecks the car in a rock. Along the night and on the next day, they are attacked by a group of deformed cannibals, fruit of the atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by USA from 1945 to 1962 in that spot. Absolutely trapped by the psychotics, they have to fight to survive.

Aaron Stanford plays the unexpected hero of the movie Doug. He is the character who plays with his cell phones and completely hates the fact that theyre traveling on road instead of by plane. He is the unexpected hero because in the beginning he comes off as a complainer other then a hero. Now, Robert Joy and Micheal Bailey Smith play as two of the mutants that attack the characters. Roberts character is practically the leader of the group and the most vicious. Micheal Bailey Smith is one of the most known actors in the film besides Ted levine. Micheal does a great job with his character and we get a sense of character within his mutant form.

Visually, The Hills Have Eyes is terrific. In the opening credits, we get a bombing montage which really scared the hell out of me. Never in my life have I ever expected to be this scared over some opening credits. Alexandre Aja approaches this in a very rough form. The opening scene kind of introduces us to some of the lighting schemes which Alexandre uses. Plus we get a look at some of his directing and gore styles. For most of the movie though, the lights are good and some of the angles are truly terrific.

The gore effects are brought to you by KNB Effects. KNB has become one of the biggest effects group in the film buisness. Theyre gore effects and every litle detail they put into their work is fantastic. Next time you watch films like Land of The Dead and Dawn of The Dead, you will see a fine example of their work. With The Hills Have Eyes, they really pushed themselves to make a more fantastic look on all the effects. The death scenes are gory and creative, but kind of have a touch of reality instead of just gallons and gallons of blood at a time.

The Hills Have Eyes is really an amazing movie. With great gore scenes, fantastic scares and an all around good time with the movie. It is a large success.
