Oh Most Definitely
Three things:
1) Mos Def is going to be and deserves to be a star. He can flat out act, he is funny, he has comedic timing, and he's got presence. There is a still picture of him at the end of this film that says it all. Plus he's one of the few rap artists I sill listen to.
2) This film is very good, for it's genre. It is fairly predictable in that "plot twist you didn't necessarily expect but it always seems to happen anyways" way. The action isn't DIE HARD level, but there's plenty of shooting and an explosion or two. But for this type of feature, it's well above average and highly enjoyable.
3) I'm very tired of the washed up, drunk anyone. Is there no better way to show that somebody is past their prime? From Denzel Washington in MAN ON FIRE to Tom Hanks in A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, it's the most trite way of making a man ripe for redemption. Please, let's figure out another way.
That's actually about it. 16 BLOCKS is an enjoyable action/thriller movie with an
absolutely impressive and entertaining performance by Mos Def. You're either up for that kind of film, or you're not, and you know which is which.
