Something Else
Favorite Movie Quote: "I wish I had a Dad like yours"
There are movies one stumbles across on premium channels that, once sat through, grab you again and again. You sit through it sometimes wondering why? "Something New" has become that kind of movie for me, a black and white romance. Is it just because Sanaa Lathan is so beautiful? Or is it because Simon Baker so wonderfully underplays his part? Or is it the story of an uptight black lady who finds her groove in an unpretentious white man while she's on the trail of social standing.
There are echoes of Lady Chatterly here. The gardener, a drop out copywriter, and the Lady lawyer from a prestigious black family. She's a neatnik and he's got a shaggy Golden Retriever,a constant source of shedding. And there is the perfect mate for her, a black lawyer on the way up too; Blair Underwood gives good sleaze and loves her weave, her false identity. The gardener likes her natural; it's her choice of how she wants to live, authentic or not.
Thank God she's got a great father, Earl Billings, who empowers her to be herself. It is a romance after all. The leads are smokin, the dog is sweet; sometimes you need comfort food for thought. Try "Something New".
