Walk the Line was a hidden treasure!
Walk the Line was the biggest surprise for me that a film has given me in a long time. When I say surprised I mean imagine you walk in your house and your husband whom you have children with is having an affair on your bed with another man.......yea that look of surprise was the same look my face expressed while the credits rolled.
I avoided this movie for over a year because I couldn't care less about Johnny Cash, I do not like his music or care about his life, and I had never even heard of his wife June Cash nor did I care to hear about her. So you can imagine how desperate I was to actually watch this at 4:00 in the morning when nothing else was on cable.
I mean desperation was not the word, I even looked for old Roseanne or Family Matters reruns and they weren't even on, which you can always use them as a safety net for something to view during the horrible morning infomercial hours. So I said what the hell I'll watch it!
I started watching this film and pathetically it thrilled me to see Robert Patrick in another film because I am such a huge Terminator 2 fan. Would you stop reading right now if I said I was a big Strip Tease fan? Well, Im not but its the only other movie I can think of right now that he was also in. So It got me in a good movie mood right off the bat. Another thing I noticed was that I had seen Joaquin Phoenix in something else but I could not put my finger on it. Turns out It was Gladiator that I was thinking of.....which I had to look up in the database after the film went off.
I must say that this film was excellent in every way. Joaquin Phoenix's Performance was just magical, with me not knowing anything about Johnny Cash I new that the way Phoenix portrayed him was correct....it just fit together all to well. Reese Witherspoon gave probably the best performance of her career......Besides Fear.....just kidding. I have never been a huge fan of hers, not that I disliked her or anything but she did not choose many films that I could relate to so I never gave her a chance. She has now been boosted towards the top of my favorite actress list and my infamous "top 10" list. This is a male thing if you cannot figure out what kind of list that is dont ask! Hey everyone has dreams.........
Amazingly Reese and Joaquin performed all of the songs themselves and did an excellent job. I was fooled I thought they had to be lip singing but at the same time thought it was remarkable how well they matched the timing up with the words and their mouth's. Reese was even contacted by several recording companies after the film that wanted her to make an album.......Good choice not to pursue that I do not like musicians turned actors or actors turned musicians.
For those of you that have not given this film a chance like me, quit being stubborn and watch it. I knew that it had to be decent when I read that it profited over $100,000,000 in the box office alone. Either there is a lot of hillbillies that love Mr.Cash or there is a lot of people that enjoyed this well performed motion picture.
