Movie Review by oriona

I will first admit that I adore the 1995 A&E Pride and Prejudice version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. That version, to me, is absolutely breathtaking. I loved the fact that it was 5 hours long, to me that is like the unabridged version.

Though I adore the 1995 version, I must say that I am now smitten with this one. Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy respectively, have created their own magic with this version.

This "abridged" version , 2 hours, has kept to the great novel that Jane Austen had written, for the most part. I do wish that it showed the part of how Mr. Darcy discovered Wickham and Lydia and made sure they married. Also, Elizabeth and Jane were not shown to be as close as they really were. They confided to eachother almost everything in the novel, but alas, if you want details, watch the A&E version.

Matthew MacFayden did a wonderful job in his portrayal of Mr. Darcy. I loved how he seemed more vulnerable in this adaptation. Keira Knightley also did a fine job as Lizzie, with much wit and passion in her beliefs.

This adaptation was visually breathtaking, and I loved how the camera moved, especially in both ballroom scenes. I also enjoyed the moment when Elizabeth and Darcy danced with one another, and how Joe Wright made it look as if it were only the two of them in the a room filled with people. The chemistry between MacFayden and Knightley is palpable, especially in the dance scene and the misty rain proposal scene.

All in all, this was a wonderful adaptation, and even thou I do love the A&E version, I can say that this one has me smitten. And I am sure once I see it more than once, I will grow to adore this one just as much as Lizzie began to adore Darcy after getting to see him in his true light.
