Will I ever love a Tim Burton film that doesn't revolve around a crime-fighting billionare? So far the answer is a heartfelt "No," which is sad because with each film he does, he has me from the begining that quickly loses me with his farce. Burton's previous effort, "Big Fish," I would have loved had it reflected more on the strained father-son relationship instead of all the interesting circus-like characters it displayed.
As for "Charlie & The Choclate Factory," which like all Burton films is a visual treat, I stopped careing about halfway through the film. Why? Because the film couldn't decide if it wanted to be a semi-serious comedy or a complete spoof of a story. It didn't know how to manage the heart and the laughs.
Take for instance a scene where it seems a young Willy Wonka travels the world as we see him walking with overlapping shots of various nation's flags. However, after a few moments we come to see all along that he was only walking through...wait for it...a FLAG MUSUEM! HA!...I'm not amused. Yes, it is kind of funny, yet it's too silly too silly to be placed in a film that at times asks for us to embrace it's emotional scenes as well. If a filmmaker is going to take the time to go through an as goofy joke as that one than he has to keep the realm of the film on that level as well. The makers of "Airplane!" knew that it's silliness was the film's core, so they stayed with that and made a film that ask for nothing more than it's audience's laugh.
Maybe next time, Burton, I will enjoy your filmmaking. I do think you're a genius, I just don't think you're a great storyteller.
