Bewitched (2005)

A frothy confection of love, odd-ball antics, and the cute and cuddly supernatural, Nora and Delia Ephron's BEWITCHED is a romantic comedy that even your boyfriend could enjoy, thanks to Will Ferrell's presence as the yang to Nicole Kidman's yin.
Kidman plays adorable Isabel Bigelow, a witch eager to abandon her magical ways and fall in love with a regular, needy, mess of a guy. Ferrell is Jack Wyatt, a famous actor whose career has hit the skids. In a clever twist, instead of simply being a film adaptation of the old "Bewitched" TV series, this has Jack agreeing to star as Darrin in a TV series update of the Nick at Nite staple. He chances upon Isabel in a book store and spotting her perfect, Elizabeth Montgomery-esque nose, convinces her to be his Samantha.
Jack and Isabel soon start to like each other – and I mean like in that sense of "do you think he likes me?" – despite Isabel's disapproving dad, Nigel (Michael Caine), and Jack's assistant, Richie (Jason Schwartzman), who keeps pushing for Jack to act like a spoiled, demanding actor so that he's respected and feared. And no one makes outlandish, weird demands funnier than Ferrell.
The idea of Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman falling in love with each other may sound strange. Can you picture the Oscar-winning actress dancing in the moonlight with the guy who ran naked in search of an open KFC? Turns out it works – remember when Kidman hosted SNL back in 1993; she can do comedy and high drama – and Ferrell may just be the best guy out there for a romantic lead in a comedy. He makes everything funny. Jack is trying so hard to be a pompous jerk, but Ferrell keeps him sweet and goofy at the same time.
BEWITCHED has an unusually good cast of comedic actors; if you're a Daily Show fan you'll be especially happy to see Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell, and there are a few cameos to look for that I won't spoil here. Rounding out the supporting roles are Shirley MacLaine, Kristin Chenoweth (who in a nice coincidence recently played a witch on Broadway in "Wicked"), Ephron veteran Heather Burns, David Alan Grier, and Jim Turner.
This is a pleasing, genuinely funny film that may actually be something men and women will like watching together. I liked it so much, I'd even pay to see it again.
