Movie Review by Seth
January 1st, 2005

I went into this film a little skeptical, knowing that the brilliance that is Wes Anderson cannot last forever. RUSHMORE is quite possibly my favorite film of all time and ROYAL TENENBAUMS breaks the top 10. Even BOTTLE ROCKET has a very special place in my heart. I knew Owen Wilson wasn't helping with the writing on this one and the previews made it look less than flawless, which is exactly what I'd call Anderson's first 3 films (for their time in his development).

So, that was my mood going in. It was also probably my mood going out. I loved this film. I thought it was great, funny, clever, subtle, and all that. But it was far from flawless. It's greatest sin was that I didn't see it before RUSHMORE or TENENBAUMS.

I would actually have to say that Bill Murray's and Owen Wilson's (usually two of my favorite actors) performances/roles were less than I would have wanted, while Willem Dafoe's was absolutely brilliant. There are great little bits, clever things in the background, great bits of dialog, and wonderful sets. It is a good movie. It is a great movie. It's just not cinematic perfection, which I had come to expect from Anderson.
