Finding Myself Again
I have not felt this way about a movie since I watched "Chicago" in 2002. After leaving the theater all I can think about is Oscars, Oscars, Oscars for everyone! In "Finding Neverland," the directing was superb, the acting was spectacular and the technical aspects were flawless. While I'm here to talk about my movie experience, I'll give you a few reasons why this film is a must-see.
Likeability. This is one aspect I have learned to look for in a performance. That is the ultimate skill that Johnny Depp has learned to do well. Much like his French rendition of the French gypsy character as Roux in "Chocolat." His Scottish persona as JM Barrie in "Finding Neverland" touched my heart sincerely. I guess because there is always that side of me that can relate, because I will always remain the boy that I am.
Depp reached a point in his acting career that he doesn't have to do anything to create an organic character. People might describe it as an understated acting. But, in this film I don't think he was acting, I definitely think it was Depp that we saw. I think he is a boy stuck in a man's body. Much like me... In this movie he was real, he was free. An ideal role for an actor who likes to be different and unique. ( Also refreshing was seeing him clean cut and young.) He was definitely blessed to be with co-stars that made his performance reach a level of credibility rather than making him look like a lunatic. The characters Sylvia ( Kate Winslett ) and her kids especially Peter (Freddie Highmore) gave him so much love and belief back that Depp had so much to bounce off and react to. Kudos to the director Marc Forster (Monster Ball) for bringing out a very harmonious acting ensemble.
I like the mix of the real and the surreal. Us artists sometimes intermix both. We have an active imagination. The filmmakers used this with such effectiveness and in 1 hour and 40 minutes we experienced Barrie's "Neverland" with soothing effect like a New Age Music Video. Relaxing and peaceful.
After viewing "Chicago" in 2002, I said, "This'll be a great Oscar contender for both the filmmakers and the performers." I was right. I have an equally good feeling about this film. Advance congratulations to the cast and crew of "Finding Neverland" and thank you for making me find myself again.
